Platform choice

What actually gets weighed when a Tier-1 evaluation includes Frappe

When SAP is on the shortlist, the decision isn't licence cost versus licence cost. It's whether one connected platform beats a portfolio of departmental tools.

When a Tier-1 platform like SAP is genuinely on the shortlist, the business asking the question is usually past comparing licence fees. What they’re actually weighing is whether one connected platform can replace a set of departmental tools that each work fine on their own but never quite add up to one operational picture.

Electro-Serv Lanka distributes and services electrical, control and automation products for principals including Schneider Electric, SMC, Hensel, Foxtam Controls, Toho, Line Seiki and HPL. Distribution, manufacturing, warehousing and field service all needed to run under one roof. Tier-1 options, SAP included, were formally evaluated before Frappe was selected.

Why breadth is the risk, not the fit

A six-module footprint (CRM, Finance, Fixed Assets, Supply Chain, Manufacturing and Warehouse Management) is exactly the kind of scope that makes a big-bang go-live dangerous. Segregating a footprint that wide into deliverables with their own acceptance gates is what let the business adopt each area in turn, rather than swallowing the whole system at once. That’s the NXTGEN methodology doing its actual job: not speed for its own sake, but turning one enormous risk into six manageable ones.

What changed, in the business’s own words

Sales process efficiency improved. Inventory visibility improved. Financial transactions now run through the system instead of around it, which is the quieter shift but arguably the more important one, since a transaction running around the system is one nobody can report on later.

The clearest signal, though, is commercial rather than technical. Five years after commencing in 2021, the client is upgrading to the latest platform version, with the work already underway. Nobody upgrades a system they’re quietly planning to replace.

The actual question worth asking

If SAP or another Tier-1 platform is on your shortlist alongside Frappe, the useful comparison isn’t feature-for-feature parity. It’s whether the alternative gives every department, sales, finance, stock, manufacturing, one shared record, or whether it’s a strong point solution that will need three more systems bolted around it just to do the same job.
