We get asked some version of the same question on almost every first call: why Frappe, and not one of the bigger names everyone’s heard of? The honest answer isn’t a single feature. It’s three things that compound.
No per-user licence fees
Most licensed ERP is priced per named user, which sounds manageable until the business grows and every new hire in finance, sales or the warehouse floor becomes a recurring cost that has nothing to do with the value they add. Frappe is open source. The cost is implementation and support, not a permanent subscription tax on headcount. For a growing Sri Lankan business, that difference compounds every year, not just at signing.
It gets localised properly, not patched around
VAT, EPF, ETF and the other statutory requirements specific to Sri Lanka aren’t an afterthought bolted onto a generic template. They get configured at the platform level: chart of accounts, tax templates, payroll components, print formats. That’s a structural difference from adapting software built for a different market and hoping the edge cases don’t bite later.
The framework and the application are the same codebase
This is the one people underestimate until they hit it. ERPNext (the application most people mean when they say “Frappe ERP”) is built on the Frappe framework using the exact same tools available to any developer. When your business needs something the standard configuration doesn’t cover, that gets built as a proper extension of the platform, not a fragile workaround glued on from outside. It stays upgrade-safe because it was never a hack in the first place.
Where this actually shows up
Manufacturing is our largest sector, and it’s a good test case: multi-level bills of materials, routing, work orders, capacity planning and job costing all need to talk to each other and to finance in real time, not at month-end. We’ve delivered implementations to more than 20 Sri Lankan manufacturers on exactly this foundation.
None of this is about Frappe being cheaper in isolation. It’s about a Sri Lankan business getting a platform that fits its actual compliance requirements, doesn’t punish it for growing, and can be extended by the same team that built it rather than a vendor on the other side of the world.
